Skills for Life is the national strategy to help people improve their English, Maths, ICT and employability skills. We offer a wide range of Full Time and Part Time courses from Pre-Entry to Level 2.

Functional Skills

What are Functional Skills?

Functional Skills are national qualifications which demonstrate proof of a practical understanding of English, Maths and Information Communication Technology (ICT) that will help individuals to succeed in work, in further learning and in life. .

Functional Skills as part of a Full Time programme:
Are you taking a full time qualification course? Do you want to go on to University or find employment? Whatever your plans, Functional Skills can help you:

  • Develop your skills and enhance your career prospects
  • Develop the ability to adapt to new situations and different contexts
  • Recognise and improve the applied knowledge you have to support your academic and career development
  • Gain point scores for the assessment and attainment tables

At Greenwich Community College all full time learners are expected to study at least one Functional Skill.

Part time Functional English and Functional Maths

We offer part time courses in adult literacy and adult numeracy for people who want to brush up their reading, writing, speaking and maths? These classes can help you to:

  • Improve your job prospects
  • Manage your finances better
  • Fill in forms and write letters
  • Help your children with their homework
  • Gain Skills for Life Literacy, Numeracy and ICT qualifications including the National Tests

There are classes available from pre-entry to Level 2.

Entry Level Vocational Studies (ELVS) and the Foundation Learning Tier (FLT)

If you want to improve your reading, writing, maths and ICT skills and also gain a work related qualification, full time Entry Level Vocational Studies (ELVS) and Foundation Learning Tier (FLT) courses can help you to find employment or progress to higher level courses. They are particularly suitable for:

  • Young people aged 16-19 who are not yet ready for a GCSE route
  • Adults with who need to brush up their English and maths skills before starting a higher level vocational course
  • Young people/adults with learning difficulties

What do I need to get on to these courses?
You do not need any qualifications but you should be willing to work well and have an interest in the subject pathway you choose.

Where do they lead?
Successful completion of these courses could lead to a higher level course or employment.

We offer courses in:

  • Health and Social Care
  • Life Skills
  • Preparation for Work
  • CACHE Entry Certificate in Childcare

How much do courses cost?

  • Functional English and Functional Maths classes are free for everyone.
  • ELVS and FLT Classes are free for young people aged 16-18 and people aged 19+ who receive certain means tested benefits.
