Languages Self Assessment Guide

You can assess your own level for our language courses using the guide below:

Stage 1

  • No previous knowledge is necessary
  • Suitable for rusty beginners

Stage 2

Suitable if you can:

  • Give and ask for personal information about yourself and family
  • Order food and drink
  • Give and ask the time
  • Ask for directions
  • Book a hotel room
  • Recognise and use the present simple tense

Stage 3

This stage is suitable if you can:

  • Give information about yourself and your daily activities;
  • Describe people and places
  • Make enquiries in public places
  • Make arrangements to go out;
  • Talk about hobbies and interests
  • Use the present, past and future tenses of verbs

Stage 4

This stage is suitable if you can:

  • Develop your understanding of the main points of standard texts, both in listening and reading.
  • Develop strategies for dealing with most situations that are likely to arise while travelling in the countries where the language is spoken.
  • Expand your vocabulary and structures necessary to describe experiences, events, plans and ambitions.
  • Write letters giving news, describing experiences and impressions, expressing feelings or giving or requesting detailed information(e.g. replying to an advertisement, applying for a job).
  • Use confidently the main tenses of the verb, as well as nouns, adjectives and pronouns correctly.

Stage 5

This stage is suitable if you can:

  • Understand authentic, long passages of some complexity (e.g. interviews, adverts, news broadcast etc.)
  • Participate in authentic conversation with native speakers deploying a good and appropriate range of generally accurate language and argue a viewpoint convincingly
  • Understand authentic texts (e.g. articles from the press, literary extracts etc.) with ease
  • Write extended texts using a wide range of language and vocabulary accurately (e.g. reports, essays, letters and emails)
  • Confidently use a wide range of grammar structures including conditional and subjunctive tenses, pronouns etc.
