  • Yes, Minister?22nd February 2012On Thursday 2 February the ESOL Department was visited by group of civil servants from BIS, DWP, The Home Office, DCLG and the SFA. All of these departments deal with ESOL from different angles (preemployment training and English for Work, ESOL for job seekers, for citizenship, for community cohesion etc) and often make conflicting demands on providers and students.
  • Students Get Catering Jobs at the Olympics 201224th January 2012On 6 January 2012 GLLAB (Greenwich Local Labour and Business) working with ARAMARK, a catering contractor for the Stratford Athletes Village, came to the Plumstead centre to support a second round of applications, this time for a range of catering jobs at the Olympic Games.

  • Students Raise Money for Children in Need15th November 2011Our Level 1 Childcare students, took part in an activity for their Monetary Unit in Employability. The unit is Introduction to Working with Others, so the students decided and created different activities to raise money for Children in Need.
  • Government Changes to Fees for Adults on Benefits7th September 2011After lobbying from colleges across the country, including Greenwich Community College, the government has changed its funding policy for adults on qualification courses.

    This means that some qualification courses which we were previously charging a fee for are now free to adults on a range of benefits.

If you look at “ten pounds” and “dead mouse” in the mirror as you say them, you will see how similar they look and how easy it could be to confuse them if you do not hear too well. One in seven people in our population has a hearing loss. For some this condition is inherited, for some it comes as the result of illness or accident, for some it comes as the result of exposure to noise, and for many it is just a natural part of the ageing process.

Out of those who sat A Level exams at Greenwich Community College 100% passed in many subjects. 342 started on this journey last year taking the overall achievement rate up by 1.4%. Aasim Mirza, was one of those.

  • Swiss Tony13th July 2009GCC Physics Lecturer Tony Thyer is currently out in Switzerland at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. CERN is the control centre for the Large Hydrogen Collider (LHC) and Tony was one of only a few teachers from around the World selected to attend a Teachers course about the experiment.

  • Money4Life - not just for Christmas16th December 2008Students at Greenwich Community College are benefiting from money management courses, thanks to funding by the Bank of America. The courses are run by Business & Education London South, which offers training to young people across south London.
  • Romans victorious at GCC’s Fourth Autumn Go Tournament5th December 2008GCC’s 2008 Autumn Go Tournament was held on Monday 1st December in the Students’ lounge. All of the entrants had only learnt the game recently and had never played in a tournament before.
  • Family Learning at its best26th November 2008As the title implies, family learning, gave my whole family the opportunity and experience of learning together.

    There were various courses on offer, these included, Numeracy course, Literacy course Science course, Story sacks, and an Arts and craft course, just to name a few.

  • Annual GCC Corporation Conference October 20083rd November 2008Attending the annual GCC Corporation Conference presented an opportunity to meet with the governors and the employers of the college and talk to individuals about the roles they play within the committee and what influence they have on the college. It was also an opportunity for the members of the committee to ask us as student representatives, questions on our experiences at this college.

  • A Day Out2nd September 2008Upon joining Greenwich College I was blessed to be taken out with my orientation class to a museum. The Teacher of this class thought that this adventure would be a good ice breaker to find out how different nations migrated to London. Little did she know that history was something I always had a keen interest in.
  • LLC in Zambia18th July 2008Two students and I travelled to Zambia with the Charity the Tag Rugby Development Trust (TRDT). 12 volunteers in total form the UK met up with 12 local volunteers made up of school teachers and coaches who work with other charities in Zambia.

The weather was fine with beautiful sunshine. Many runners, families with children and other people were having a good time.
  • A Visit to the British Museum18th April 2008A few weeks ago I visited the British Museum where I enjoyed the First emperor of China exhibition. The story about the after life army is unimaginable. The monarch Qin Shi Huang apparently was afraid of death. He believed in after life and prepared a life-sized terracotta army, probably to protect him and to continue his conquest.
  • A Life on the Ocean Waves7th April 2008London is full of entertainment. Last Friday I did a cruise along the River by night, it was very exciting. Departing from Greenwich pier, the cruise duration was two hours.
  • St Patrick’s Day in London25th March 2008Sunday 16th March was my first celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Under rain and wind crowds were underestimated at Trafalgar square in Central London.

How quickly they learn to ignore you, chat to their neighbours, laugh and joke and generally make loads of noise. Still we wouldn’t want ‘em too quiet and devoid of life, would we? Maybe the next few weeks will bring about the happy medium.
