Nick Raynsford the MP for Greenwich and Woolwich visited an AS Government & Politics class on 13 November 2009. Students researched issues they wanted the MP to talk about and also prepared questions. A lively discussion took place between Nick Raynsford and the GCC students, where questions such as housing, the stop & search policy and the minimum wage for 18-22 year olds were asked.
Nick explained the role and functions of an MP, the role of parliament and the governing structures in Britain. The topics discussed were related to their AS Government & Politics syllabus, which looks at people and politics in the first term and governing the UK in the second.
The students have been studying the course for a few months and for some students it is the first time they have met a politician.
Maria Vasquez-Aguilar (Government & Politics tutor) said “.....the students were able to experience, and gain a valuable insight, into how MPs operate and the way politics works in Britain”.
