They worked with two of our daytime GCSE groups, and were joined by some students from Public Services.
Steve Grant, who teaches the Public Services students, said “This kind of employer/student contact is invaluable. It allows employers good quality contact time with future potential employees as well as allowing students a chance to look first hand at employers to observe whether or not they can see themselves in that environment.”
The day after, 11 students from A2 maths went to Chatham Theatre to hear a series of talks organised by a group called Maths Inspiration.
These were talks by well-known experts who are also excellent communicators, and they covered a wide range of topics from interpreting medical test results to throwing boomerangs, and the most fuel-efficient way to fly to Australia. There was also a competition to guess (or try to calculate approximately) the number of jelly beans in a jar. One of our students got very close to the right answer – but we didn’t win because we democratically combined her suggestion with other people’s!
The idea was to show that there’s more to maths than just what’s taught in the classroom, and it succeeded in doing this very well. Sarah Gasquione, Maths Department.
