Six Greenwich Community College students were invited into BBC Radio 1 to take part in a focus group in preparation for the stations Hackney Weekend and found themselves broadcasting live across the nation on the 1Xtra Tim Westwood Show.
The focus group formed part of the build up to the BBC’s biggest ever free ticketed live music event, on Hackney Marshes on 23-24 June 2012, as part of the London 2012 Festival and Cultural Olympiad.
Students were shown a short clip of last year’s event and were asked to brain storm and discuss a number of topics about Greenwich. Questions ranged from what they loved about Greenwich to what they thought could improve the area.
Jiajun Wei, 19 from China found it “helpful to know about the area I live in and the improvements that could be considered.”
After the focus group, students were taken on a tour of the studios and were invited to listen in and participate on Tim Westwood’s show, taking part in the live coverage of his ‘intern competition’.
Belan Asaad aged 20 from Plumstead described the experience of being in the studios as “amazing to know what happens behind the scenes.”
Head of Student Service Andrew Smith said; “This was a fantastic opportunity for GCC students to be part of the preparations for what promises to be a fantastic event for London.”
