Over 150 guests and sponsors gathered at Charlton Athletic for the annual Greenwich Community College awards ceremony on Wednesday 14 December.
The event celebrated the outstanding achievements over the past year of students and staff. Guest of honour for the ceremony was the British weightlifter and 2012 medal contender Zoe Smith.
The students awards were split into four categories; Contribution to College Life, Contribution to the Local Community, Personal Progress & Achievement and Excellence.
Amongst the winners was 23 year old Robert Long from Woolwich. Robert was injured in active service in Afghanistan less than a year ago and is now studying AS Level English and Maths at the college’s Plumstead Centre.
Robert (pictured receiving his award from Zoe Smith) was full of praise for the staff who have supported him while he has been at the college:
“GCC has been absolutely fantastic for me. It has given me focus and drive. My aim now is to complete my studies and progress onto university to study Government and Politics’.
Before presenting the awards, 17 year old Zoe Smith from Abbey Wood spoke about the dedication required to make the Great Britain weightlifting team and spoke of her aspirations for the 2012 Olympics. She encouraged the award winners to; “follow your dreams and don’t give up on yourself”.
The event also celebrated outstanding achievements by teaching and support staff and teams.
Speaking after the event, Principal Gary Chin said;
“I would like to extend my personal congratulations to each and every one of our award winners and gratitude to each of our sponsors in making this a wonderful and memorable event for our students.”
