GCC Public Services students joined young people across the host Olympic boroughs to develop a series of local community projects inspired by London 2012.

EDF Energy has teamed up with youth action charity Envision and the host borough colleges to launch this year’s Legacy Champions programme, and use the inspiration of the Games to develop projects for young people to tackle environmental and social issues by taking action in their community.

Adam, 17, studying BTEC in Public Services at Greenwich Community College, said:

”I am taking part in the Legacy Champions programme as my course is all about public service and it is nice to do more with the community.

“For our project we are planning to help the community as there are a lot of gangs in our area and the community doesn’t always interact. We are going to try and get older people to see that younger people are not always the same and try and get to know them.”

Gareth Wynn, London 2012 Programme Director for EDF, Patrick Taylor, Programmes Manager at Envision, and International Para Dressage Rider and London 2012 hopeful, Natasha Baker, were joined by more than a hundred students from nine colleges including Greenwich Community College for the programme launch on Friday (10 Feb) at City Edge in Hackney.

The Legacy Champions Programme started last year as part of a three-year partnership between EDF, Official Partner and the Official Electricity Supplier of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Envision.

Legacy Champions will see EDF Energy provide 18 employees to act as mentors to the young people involved during the six months of this year’s programme. They will work on projects that will leave a positive legacy after the 2012 games in the London boroughs that are hosting events at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Gareth Wynn, EDF Director, London 2012 Programme said:

“Many young people in London will be inspired by what they see this summer. It is great to help capture some of their energy and to help them make a positive impact in their communities. These young people are the true role models for our capital city.

“As an official partner of the London 2012 Games, EDF is committed to helping with environmental and social issues and bringing the best out of people, which is exactly what Legacy Champions is designed to do. Providing mentors will help students develop their ideas, gain new skills and build their confidence as they work on important local projects.”

The other Colleges that attended were: Barking & Dagenham College, Hackney Community College, BSix Sixth Form College, Newham College of FE, NewVIc College, Tower Hamlets College, Leyton Sixth Form College and Waltham Forest College.

Patrick Taylor, Envision Programmes Manager, said: “We’re really pleased to be running Legacy Champions in partnership with EDF Energy. Legacy Champions is a great opportunity for young people from across the Olympic boroughs to lead their own community projects and create a lasting legacy in their communities. It’s also great to be able to offer young people such a personal and empowering experience that extends the Olympic values beyond sport and into the community through corporate partnerships.”

Last year a range of projects were developed by students through Legacy Champions including a crime prevention workshop by Newham College, a mini Olympic-themed event was held by NewVIc College to raise awareness of getting active through sport and Waltham Forest College took part in a festival to encourage the community on how they can be more sustainable.

The students and mentors will also join together in March for a mass volunteering event to clean the River Thames through EDF Energy’s Helping Hands scheme.
